The Copper Country Intermediate School District (CCISD), along with OXE, host an annual science fair for the Western Upper Peninsula. Now going into its eighth year, the science fair draws two hundred students from the area to compete on the projects that they have worked on through the school year. The four highest scores of each grade are awarded at the ceremony after the judging is complete. OXE provides the manpower to organize and run the event in the Memorial Union Building every year. This year's fair was held on March 26th, 2007 and was a huge success. View pictures from 2000, 2007 Science Fair.
School Demonstrations
Each year, members of OXE go to local schools to show demonstrate various chemical and engineering skills. We make silly putty to demonstrate the changing properties of glue. We also have the kids to make Play Doh boats that are tested in the water to see how long they will last and discuss buoyancy. There are also demonstrations of chromatography, kinetics, and chemical reactions to show kids that science is fun. We hold at least two sessions per year, everyone who comes has a fun time.
CM Help Sessions
OXE provides help to the sophomore level chemical engineering classes each Sunday from 3-5 p.m. in Room 215 of the Chemical Sciences building, across the hall from the Chemistry Learning Center. Each member is works two or three hours per semester. The help is invaluable to the students as there is no learning center for the chemical engineering department.
OCE Faculty and Teaching Assistant Awards
In the spring of 1999 Omega Chi Epsilon sponsored the first annual Chemical Engineering department faculty awards. Awards are given in three categories:
Chemical Engineering Teaching Excellence Award
Chemical Engineering Exemplary Undergraduate Research Mentor Award
Chemical Engineering Outstanding Teaching Assistant (New in 2005)
The winners of these awards will have their names inscribed on a plaque which hangs on the wall of the departmental office. Past winners can be found on the history page.
