To: oce-l@mtu.edu Date: Tue, 15 Feb 2000 23:30:19 -0500 From: Brian J. Zielke Subject: OCE Meeting Minutes for February 10, 2000 The following are the meeting minutes from last Thursday's meeting. We discussed many topics so here is a recap: 1. Winter Carnival Recap Well..the sales did not go good...only 3 handwarmers were sold! So..we are looking to see if Downwind will buy the remaining ones back. If they can't, we will hold on to them for next year and hope for colder weather! 2. Officer Elections and Banquet Next term, we will be looking to elect new officers in all 4 positions. We plan on taking nominations around 5th week and then voting on 7th week. The initiation banquet for new members to OCE is planned for 8th week, April 25, and at this banquet, the new officers will be announced. So, if you will be back next year, this provides an excellent opportunity to take a leadership role in a very active organization and we encourage you to run for a position. Also, if you will be on Spring Co-op, but are still interested in running, please contact Christine before you leave. 3. Teacher Awards Voting for the Teacher Awards this year might be done on the web instead of handing ballots out in classes, as we did last year. There will be more on this next term. 4. Science Fair (the big topic) Once again, the science fair date is Saturday, March 18. In preparation for this event, we will be having meetings both 1st and 2nd week next term. The Family Activities Committee should try to have a meeting before the end of this term in order to narrow down the activities to around 6 or 7 stations. Also, 1st week next term, they will have to type out a list of instructions and other information for each experiment. The Publicity Committee needs to start contacting TV (Channel 5), radio, and newspapers before the end of the term. The Judging Committee has sent out all the letters to faculty and have received 13 responses already in a very diverse group of majors, which we were definitely hoping for. We are ordering ribbons for the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners in each grade. And as far as lunch is concerned, it looks as if pizza, pop, and ice cream will be a cheap option for us right now. We came up with about 20-25 local businesses as prospective sponsors for additional prizes for the students. The attendees at the meeting each signed up for a couple of these businesses to talk with, so hopefully they will be somewhat generous toward our science fair. In return, we will acknowledge the sponsors in our flyers and ads for the fair. We are attempting to talk to these places before the end of winter term. There is definitely a lot of work to do, but when it is all said and done, it will surely be a great success! We really need the help of EVERYONE. If you will be working at the science fair, e-mail Christine for a T-Shirt size, as we will all receive them for our efforts. 5. Calumet Science Fair If you will be here on Thursday of Finals Week and would be interested in working for a little bit at the Calumet Science Fair, they are looking for judges throughout the day. The time is from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. So if you have a couple hours which you would be available that would be great. Please e-mail Christine with your available hours soon. OK! Thank you for hanging in there! That covers pretty much everything! Have a good day and we look forward to hearing back from everyone very soon, Brian Zielke Vice-President Omega Chi Epsilon
